Being Scientists

Science @ Hannah More

Science at Hannah More is taught in a way that inspires, excites and develops children’s curiosity whilst extending and challenging them as scientists. Lessons are active and engaging and teachers will make the most of outdoor learning whether that be on the school grounds or an off-site trip. Scientific skills are not taught separately but intertwined into the enquiries as active experiments for the children to do. This begins in Year 1 as children doing guided scientific experiments and write ups and progresses to Year 6 where children are able to design and carry out their own detailed experiment with little support. STEM week occurs in Term 4 and each class works on a variety of exciting experiments and activities around a whole school theme.

Each week we listen to different music in assemblies and we learn a little about each piece - the music itself and the musician. Below you can read about the most recent music we have been listening to.

Coding in the Hub

Computing @ Hannah More

Computer Literacy is a huge focus in our world and this is something we aim to equip our pupils with through Computing @ Hannah More. There are 5 strands to our computing curriculum which are discreetly taught through a 45minute lesson once a fortnight. We want children to leave Hannah More able to use computers, understand the digital world and be able to interact safely with all forms of ICT.

We are very lucky to have both whole class sets of IPADS and in KS2 Chromebooks for every year group. This means that we can give the children plenty of exposure to creating digital media on a regular basis whether it be to creat art, word processing or higher up in the school, presenting data.

We follow Espresso Coding for the teaching of coding across the school which gives the children an introduction to how to code games and by Year 6 build websites. You can find out more about the Espressi Coding scheme here.

How we teach Languages

Learning a foreign language provides an opening to learn about other cultures.

At Hannah More, we believe that with our high-quality language education, we foster children’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world.

The foreign language taught at Hannah More is French. This language is taught in Key Stage 2.
Our French lessons enable children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to others, both in speech (Years 3 and 4) and in writing (Year 5 and 6).
We also provide opportunities for children to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read books written in French.

In French lessons, children are taught to:
- listen to spoken French language
- explore the patterns and sounds of language through stories, songs, poems and rhymes
- Have a simple conversation; ask and answer questions; express opinions
- speak in sentences, using basic, familiar vocabulary and phrases
- develop accurate pronunciation of words so that others can understand them
- broaden their vocabulary and develop understanding of new words
- use a French dictionary confidently
- describe people, places, things and actions
- write phrases from memory and create new sentences

Design Technology @ Hannah More

The process of designing, making and improving products is at the heart of D.T. @ Hannah More. Through the enquiries children will design and make items for a purpose linked to another subject such as science. They develop different skills and are introduced to different methods of joining, moving and evaluating poroducts as they move through the school.

Cooking is a key skill we want our children to have the opportunity to try as they move through the school. We are currently working on creating a series of Collaborative Cooking partners in our community who will inspire the children and give them the chance to be in a kitchen environment, watch this space!
