Usually we have lots of volunteers helping in school in various ways. We value the different skills and experiences that volunteers bring. Because of the Covid-19 situation, most volunteering is on hold.
Volunteers have helped in the classrooms, read with children, supported school trips and visits and worked alongside lunchtime staff. We have also welcomed volunteers at our after-school club - this runs every day from 3.15 until 6.00 and welcomes up to 20 children a day. This is an ideal opportunity to gain experience of working with children in a playwork setting. We ask that volunteers are able to commit to a regular slot for at least a term. We can usually provide references for volunteers who have been with us for 3 months or more.
All volunteers must be confident English speakers with good basic skills - this is usually equivalent to a level 1 qualification or above. We occasionally welcome PGCE students for 2-week placements at the start of the school year and over this academic year we will welcome several student teachers from Europe as well.
We have an application form, which is available here. Then if we can offer you a placement we then need to check your DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) certificate, or carry out a new check. We ask for a contribution of £15 to process this check. Before you start your placement a volunteering agreement is also completed and signed. The volunteering agreement explains our guidelines regarding confidentiality, health and safety, child protection and communication. You can read this here.
READING TRAINING FOR VOLUNTEERS
Miss Judge, who oversees reading at Hannah More, regularly runs training sessions for people interested in volunteering to help with reading. The last course ran in January 2020 More information here. Further training will take place when we are able to run this.
