Play

“Playing is integral to children’s enjoyment of their lives, their health and their development. Children and young people – disabled and non-disabled – whatever their age, culture, ethnicity or social and economic background, need and want to play, indoors and out, in whatever way they can. Through playing, children are creating their own culture, developing their abilities, exploring their creativity and learning about themselves, other people and the world around them. Children need and want to stretch and challenge themselves when they play. Play provision and play space that is stimulating and exciting allows children to encounter and learn about risk. This helps them to build confidence, learn skills and develop resilience at their own pace.” Play England “Charter for Children’s Play” 2015

Hannah More was born on 2nd February 1745. She was passionate about education and used her wealth to set up schools in the Bristol area. Our Hannah More school was originally built on the site of Trinity Road Police Station using money that Hannah More left in her will. In 1943 the school moved to our current building.

We celebrated the 270th birthday of Hannah More today. She visted us and we learned about the way people lived way back in the late 1700s.

We also had a competition between the classes to make the best cake for Hannah More!

Our Big Play Video

At Hannah More we bellieve that through playing we learn lots of useful skills. Watch our video to find out more...

In Term 1 children in Year 5 and 6 learnt all about Fair Trade. At the end of the term they had to design their own fair trade chocolate with packaging and make a pitch to a "Dragon" about why their product was better than everyone else's! Watch the video to get a flavour of the event!

Tea with the Lord Mayor

On Friday Ms Ramsay, Ms Judge and Ruth were invited to visit the Mansion House for tea with the Lord Mayor, Alastair Watson and his wife Sarah. They had heard about the award we received for our fabulous work helping parents and carers get involved in Reading with children. The city's Director of People, John Readman was also there. We had a lovely afternoon meeting new people and talkign about the great community at Hannah More.3

This term we will be running English, Family Learning, Parenting and Cycling as well as continuing our drama group. We also have Outdoor Adventure Play on Tuesdays (open to all children who have an adult with them). Later this month we have two Family Swim sessions and another open-top bus trip (as the last one was so popular!). Look out in the newsletter for full details!

Family Holiday trips

This summer we organised a seris of trips in and around Bristol. Lots of people enjoyed an open-top sightseeing bus ride (we only got a little bit wet!), a small group of us challenged ourselves with an 8-mile canoe adventure on the River Wye and lots more went exploring in the Forest of Dean. Sadly the weather was just too wet for our mountain trip but we will rearrange this for September - along with another bus trip for those people who missed out this time.
