Independent learning

We want all children at Hannah More to have the skills, the confidence and the self belief to learn independently.

The Hub

The Hub is our new independent learning and resource base. In the Hub you will find a wide selection of fiction and non fiction books, a reading den, space for groups to learn independently and computers for specialised computing and ICT.

The Hub is run by myself, Mrs Kyte, and the wonderful Victoria Johnson. You will find one of us in the Hub every day. We will be working with groups of children to progress their learning while focusing on their independent learning skills. We will of course be supported by our learning heroes as well.

Learning Heroes

The Hub is open daily for teachers to book groups of children in to complete learning tasks designed to help them develop their independent learning skills and to create their own learning journey. These activities are often problem based and open ended so children can not only learn about the subject or topic in hand but also about how they work well as learners, how they can use the learning skills they have and which learning skills they need to develop further. The Hub is also a great place for collaborative work as their is space and resources for children to dive in to their team work without fear of disrupting other groups and with the freedom to use a wide variety of resources and tools.

Newspaper Club

Currently the Hannah More Journalists meet in the Hub every Thursday morning, bright and early at 7:30am, to put together the school's termly newspaper 'More Hannah More'. This team of year 5 and 6 students work very hard to keep up to date on all the happenings at Hannah More and regularly attend important events in the Hannah More calendar to document them and of course interview key participants. Look out for this exciting publication on the last day of every term in your child's book bag but if you missed a copy don't worry! You can pick up a copy in the school office or directly from the Hub.

Coding Club

Coding is a new and exciting part of the curriculum at Hannah More. Coding simply means to write instructions for a computer i.e. to create computer programs. All classes take part in coding lessons but for some year 5s  this just is not enough and so they join me and two wonderful volunteers from Bristol University to tackle more complex coding at Code Club. If your child is interested in joing code club and they are in year 5 watch out for letters coming home soon announcing free places. If you would like to find out more about Code Club why not check out their website by clicking here.

Lunchtime Reading

Of course our Hub is also a library filled with row upon row of wonderful, exciting, inspiring books and children at Hannah More love nothing more than a chance to get their hands on them and dive in. Every class has a timetabled session each week for this very purpose but for lots of our children that is just not enough #kidslovebooks! In order to feed these book hungry children the Hub is open at lunchtimes for 'lunchtime reading'. On Tuesdays we open exclusively for Key Stage 1 children, on Wednesdays it is boys only and on Thursdays we open for Key Stage 2. We only have 15 places in each of these reading slots so in the mornings when your children are in the playground getting ready to line up with their teacher they should sign up with Vic if they would like one of these coverted spots. We run a first come first serve policy.

 The 'Hubrary'

We are very lucky at Hannah More not to have just any library - we have a 'Hubrary'! Our shelves are packed with exciting, inspiring, "can't wait to get my hands on" books.

To keep our stock of books nothing less than amazing we are extremely lucky to have been sponsored and received donations from some of our partner businesses; the Greggs Foundation, Ibis Hotel and IOP Publishing.

Every week Vic and I will choose a small selection of the books we have been able to buy for the Hub, thanks to this sponsorship and these donations, to display in our 'New Arrivals' section. Look out on twitter and/or our Hub Blog to be the first to know which new titles are about to be released.

Check our photo gallery below to see which titles have already been added thanks to Ibis, Greggs and IOP.
