Maths
Maths learning will be similar to last year, where children will focus on one specific block of work (such as adding, subtracting, fractions, shape etc.) over a few weeks.
English (Writing and Reading)
Each term, the children will use a high-quality text as their stimuli for writing and to develop their reading skills. Using the books, children will study different genres of story writing, as well as looking at non-fiction writing and poetry. They will use sentence structures from the text to help them explore grammatical features of a text and develop their use of higher level punctuation. Additionally, children will infer information and answer questions about their book. They will learn to unpick new vocabulary and predict what will happen next using clues from the story. Below is a list of the books we will be using in Year 5 this year:
Kick
Street Child
Cosmic
The Explorer
The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe
Varmints
These books link to each terms enquiry.
Enquiry
Each enquiry is a question that the children will gradually answer over the term. The children will be set a challenge at the start and the children will work towards achieving that challenge throughout their learning. For example, they may create a video documentary or a museum/gallery of their learning. Our enquiries this year will be:
Who is trading with whom?
What goes on behind the scenes? (performance term - Oliver!)
What makes our planet unique?
What is chocolate?
Where is our twin?
How do habitats affect lifecycles?
P.E.
Adam our sports coach will be teaching P.E. to Year 5. P.E. kits should be worn every Thursday for P.E and children can stay in them all day. P.E. kit is navy or black shorts or jogging bottoms, a house colour t-shirt and trainers.
Physical exercise is really important in helping keep children physically and mentally fit. Please encourage your child to be active and eat healthily.
Mrs Markham will also teach the children whilst the teachers have their planning time.
Year 5 hope to be going swimming on a Thursday during term 3. We will provide more information on this nearer the time.
Wider curriculum
R.E. is taught through R.E. days. In Year 5, children will also have regular PSHE, Wellbeing and Mindfulness lessons to develop their self-care and calming skills. They will also have regular handwriting and spelling lessons. Golden time will be on a Friday afternoon. This is an opportunity for the children to be taught new games and learn to play together constructively.
Homework
Homework will be sent home on a Thursday and should be brought back on a Monday.
It is really important the children also read regularly at home.
If you want to help your child further, please support them with learning their spellings and times tables.
They will have a weekly spelling test on a Monday based on the homework spellings.Time table Rockstars - https://ttrockstars.com/

Welcome to Year 2!
Miss Griffiths is the teacher in BFG Class on Mondays and Tuesdays. Marta is in class all day on Wednesdays.
Mrs Moreton is the teacher in BFG Class on Thursdays and Fridays.
If you ever need to speak to us about anything, big or small, please come find us on the playground or ask to make an appointment with the office.
Learning
We expect to have a safe, respectful and engaged learning environment, with children developing their learning skills and enjoying their learning.
The school day starts at 8.45 and finishes at 3.15.
Writing
Our writing is inspired by some fantastic texts such as Tin Forest, Traction Man and Pattan’s Pumpkin. These texts also link to our enquiry lessons. The children will develop their creative writing skills and grammar over the year. We encourage the children to take pride in their learning and there will be a big focus on handwriting this year. Please continue to practise weekly spellings throughout the year and test your child regularly.
Reading
We encourage parents to read at home daily. They should read for at least 15 minutes in the evening. It really helps to develop children's learning if they are asked lots of questions about what they have just read. Please remember that this can be any book at all as we encourage children to develop a love of reading.
Children's books will be changed on a Tuesday. Please ensure children bring in their book bags on a Tuesday.
Enquiry
Over the course of the year, Year 2 will have 7 different enquiry questions. These questions will form the basis of our enquiry teaching.
The questions we will answer this term are:
Term 1: Behind the Scenes?
Term 2: What could Traction Man’s playground be made of?
Term 3: How do plants grow? and How do we live a healthy life?
Term 4: Who is important to my city?
Term 5: What is home?
Term 6: How are schools the same?
Homework
Homework is set every Thursday and should be handed back in every
Children will have spellings every week.
P.E
Children may wear their P.E kit for the whole day each Tuesday. This should be a t-shirt in their house colour as well as shorts or jogging bottoms, and trainers or daps.
We are really looking forward to the year ahead :)
