Our Wednesday morning started with a surprise
Our Wednesday morning started with a suprise raid on our classrooms!
On Tuesday 7th February 2017, Year 5 took part in Safer Internet Day: an e-safety event that happens all around the world.
On Monday year 5 went on an inspiring Science trip to Bloodhound SSC.
Here we learnt about how science and maths contribute to being an engineer. At Bloodhound they are creating the fastest car to break the land record speed which is currently 633mph.
During the morning we learnt about all the different aspects of designing and making the car. They used 'CFD' which stands for 'Computational, fluid, dynamics' to design the shape, the pressure points and the materials. We learnt how the engine combustion system worked within the car to allow it to reach that speed. After this, we were given a tour around the workshop to look at each part of the car in detail. At Bloodhound they have a huge team working on the project, some infamous engineers from formula 1 and ex-army pilots. For the main body they used titanium because it was the strongest yet the lightest metal. The cabin, where Andy the driver sits, was moulded to his body shape using a bean bag type mould.
Later on we were given a team challenge to design and create a rocket car. We collaborated using our questioning skills to come up with a streamlined design which had some drag and a fin. They helped us to create the shape using the hot wire cutter and glue guns.
Finally, it was time to race! Each car had a programmed micro-bit in it to allow us to measure the speed including the use of a speed gun. We couldn't believe how fast they were! Our winning car reached a speed of 45mph! It was amazing to see something we made in action.

Yesterday I went on the internet and found some Viking songs which we had been learning in class. The song I listened to was called 'Loki the Joker' and 'Go Goblin's'. I thought they were hilarious!
You can find them here: Viking songs!

We innovated our story 'The Saga of Biorn' this week and published them into mini books! In order to publish our stories, we spent a lot of time editing our spellings, punctuation and grammar. We are so proud of our neat handwriting and our interesting vocabulary!
These are written by Yacqub, Denny, Ali and Hala
Yesterday a Viking man scared us by raiding our classroom and everyone screamed! He was wearing chainmail armour, a pocket for his sword and his knife – I thought he was going to kill us!
During the day, we learnt more about Vikings. He told stories about famous Vikings and their battles. One of the stories involved weapons, like a leg-biter and an axe. We were allowed to have a look at the weapons and try on the armour! The chainmail armour was very heavy however I (Mohamed Isse) managed to hold it! Throughout the day we joined in the stories acting in role wearing costumes. The men wore mainly blue tunics with belts and girls wore a range of coloured tunics. I had to act out a wolf to protect the King, Odin, wearing a fur coat. Later on Hogarth taught us how to light a fire outside. Can you guess what makes a fire? Well.... you need flint, steel and charcloth to create sparks! Once it is smouldering you can light the sawdust/wood chippings! Hogarth was very quick I was surprised! It was a great day!

On Wednesday 22nd June both Year 5 classes took part in a pirate tour around the floating harbour.
This week Year 5 have looked at how St Phillips has changed since the Industrial revolution. They have had fun creating short pieces of drama. Read on to find out more...
On Tuesday 7th June, Year 5 Owl went to INTO University. Read on to find out what they got up to...
This term we have been learning about mountains during our topic lessons. We have looked at how mountains are formed as well as the types of plants and animals that live on them.
We have worked hard to create a collage and a peice of writing to show off our learning about mountains and the animals that live on them. Take a look at our work in the picture gallery below.
Some of our Propagated plants are starting to grow!
The stem cuttings from Snowy Owl and Tawny Owl group have grown and have even started to flower. Keep checking back for more updates!
We have been very busy in Year 5 Owl this week competing in sports day! On Tuesday afternoon we completed a series of different activities with our class. Then yesterday we all went to City Academy running track to compete for our houses in different races.
Owl Class competed in the 100m sprit, 400m, 100m relay and the egg and spoon races. Miss Tibbott was really proud of everyone in Owl class for their effort and determination during the event. After this there were parents and teacher races, Kadion's dad and Corey's brother competed! Although the walk to the race track was long, we all had a really fun day!
We are excited to find out the results of sports day today in assembly!
Year 5 Owl have been propagating plants in their science lessons this week.
This week, we have been propagating plants in science. Propagation is when you take a piece of parent plant and try and grow it into a new plant. We have taken three different cuttings of the parent plant: part of the root, part of the stem and part of the leaf.
Comment on what you think will happen with our investigation and why. Check our blog regularly for updates on how they are doing.
Have a read about the work we have done so far towards our topic outcome: "Can we create a mountainous habitat to help teach others?
In class year 5 have been thinking about toys and how the toys that children play with have changed over time. At home they thought about their favourite toy.
This term our topic is Childhood Through the Ages. To begin this topic we looked at the lives of children at the Victorian period. One of the activities we did was turning our classroom into a workhouse. Take a look at our photos and read more...
In Science this term Year 5 have been learning about Space. As part of this topic we have learnt about day and night. We have made videos to exaplain why. Why not check them out?
On the 6th January we all went to @Bristol. When we first got there we were told the rules. Then we went to the learning area and we were told about forces, such as push, pull, air resistance and gravity.
