Welcome to Year 1
Class teachers are Ms Wilkins in Gruffalo class, who is covering Miss Foley's maternity leave, and Miss Mahmood in Elmer class.
Vicki works in the classes during the morning and supports small groups of children in the afternoon.
Miss Griffiths and Mr Rossetti teach the classes on Tuesdays - one week in the morning and one week in the afternoon. This is when Year 1 have P.E.
At the beginning of the Year 1 we incorporated the foundation stage approach to learning alongside the Year 1 curriculum. This helped to enable a smooth and happy transition.
As we move through the year, the children are experiencing more formal whole class teaching.
We are always happy to talk. Please come and see one of us at the end of the day if you have any questions or concerns. You can also book an appointment through the office.
We follow the mastery curriculum for Maths; this includes learning through physical resources and developing problem solving skills through worded questions.
We started the year by teaching the children number and place value to 10; by the end of the year they should be confident to count, compare and describe numbers to 100.
We also cover shape, space and measure; including naming simple 2D and 3D shapes.
The curriculum also covers number bonds to 10 and 20, and teaches the children how to add and take away.
Our Writing is taught through picture books. Every term we will have a different picture book which will be the stimulus for lots of writing, grammar and drama activities.
In Year 1, the teaching of phonics is vital to both reading and writing.
Children learn phonics every day.
Here are some websites you could use to help your child develop phonetical awareness.
To help your child, encourage them to write everyday about something they are interested in or have done that day.
In Year 1, every child reads with an adult three times a week in class. This will be recorded in their yellow reading record books.
Please read with your child EVERY day at home, and ensure they have their book bag in school every day.
Over the course of the year, Year 1 will have 6 different enquiry questions. These questions will form the basis of our enquiry teaching.
The questions we will answer this term are:
Term 1: Who am I? and Who helps Who?
Term 2: Where is my city? and What is my hat made of?
Term 3: What grows in my city?
Term 4: What goes on behind the scenes? and the Year 1 Performance
Term 5: What am I?
Term 6: How do we play in different ways?
P.E. will be taught on a Tuesday morning one week, and a Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon the following week.
Your child will need to wear P.E. kit with a t-shirt in their house colours.
Homework is set on a Thursday. Please bring completed homework back every Monday.
