Miss Griffiths will also be teaching the children every Wednesday morning.

Learning at Hannah More

This terms topic is 'The Great Fire of London'. Make sure you check out or class blog to find out more about the fantastic learning we do in Year 2. Homework will be given to children every Thursday in their homework books. Homework is due on Mondays.

Reading at Hannah More

Books will be changed every week and we encourage lots of reading at home! You can also have fun reading and completing challenges on Bug Club. We will be providing children with logins. This a great resource to help boost childrens phonics, reading and comprehension skills. We also encourage lots of talk and visits to the library to boost your childs love for reading.

I am happy to answer and any questions. Please feel free to arrange a time to meet with me at the end of the school day.

Year 5

Year 5 (0)

It has been so lovely seeing all the children smiling and enthusiastic about being back at school. The year 5 teachers this year are Miss Evans (Owl class) and Miss Mahmood (Dove class)

We are very lucky to have Niamh as our LSA on Monday-Friday.

We are all really excited for the year ahead as we have lots of great things planned. Below, you will find lots of information about Year 5. If you have any questions or need to speak to us, we will be on the playground at the end of the day or you can arrange a meeting via the office.

Break and lunchtime

This year break time will be at 10.50-11.05.

If your child would like a morning snack, please make sure that it is fruit or vegetables as we are a healthy school.

Lunch is from 12.30-1.30.

Year 5 lunch time link adults are Salwa and Basra.

Maths

Maths learning will be similar to last year, where children will focus on one specific block of work (such as adding, subtracting, fractions, shape etc.) over a few weeks.

English (Writing and Reading)

Each term, the children will use a high-quality text as their stimuli for writing and to develop their reading skills. Using the books, children will study different genres of story writing, as well as looking at non-fiction writing and poetry. They will use sentence structures from the text to help them explore grammatical features of a text and develop their use of higher level punctuation. Additionally, children will infer information and answer questions about their book. They will learn to unpick new vocabulary and predict what will happen next using clues from the story. Below is a list of the books we will be using in Year 5 this year:

Kick

Street Child

Cosmic

The Explorer

The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe

Varmints

These books link to each terms enquiry.

Enquiry

Each enquiry is a question that the children will gradually answer over the term. The children will be set a challenge at the start and the children will work towards achieving that challenge throughout their learning. For example, they may create a video documentary or a museum/gallery of their learning. Our enquiries this year will be:

Who is trading with whom?

What goes on behind the scenes? (performance term - Oliver!)

What makes our planet unique?

What is chocolate?

Where is our twin?

How do habitats affect lifecycles?

P.E.

Adam our sports coach will be teaching P.E. to Year 5. P.E. kits should be worn every Thursday for P.E and children can stay in them all day. P.E. kit is navy or black shorts or jogging bottoms, a house colour t-shirt and trainers.

Physical exercise is really important in helping keep children physically and mentally fit. Please encourage your child to be active and eat healthily.

Mrs Markham will also teach the children whilst the teachers have their planning time.

Year 5 hope to be going swimming on a Thursday during term 3. We will provide more information on this nearer the time.

Wider curriculum

R.E. is taught through R.E. days. In Year 5, children will also have regular PSHE, Wellbeing and Mindfulness lessons to develop their self-care and calming skills. They will also have regular handwriting and spelling lessons. Golden time will be on a Friday afternoon. This is an opportunity for the children to be taught new games and learn to play together constructively.

Homework

Homework will be sent home on a Thursday and should be brought back on a Monday.

It is really important the children also read regularly at home.

If you want to help your child further, please support them with learning their spellings and times tables. They will have a weekly spelling test on a Monday based on the homework spellings.
