Hello and welcome to Year 2 BFG!
BFG class is very lucky this year to have two teachers - Mrs Sessions and Mrs White! Mrs Sessions will teach on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Mrs White will teach on Wednesday and Friday. As well as the year 2 teacher, Mrs Sessions is the Literacy and Key Stage 1 leader so spends time on a Wednesday leading her subject. On a Friday she spends the day at home with her little boy. Mrs White will always be in BFG class - when she is not the class teacher she will work alongside Mrs Sessions as the class LSA. On a Wednesday and a Friday Stella will be the class LSA.
On Wednesday mornings, Year 2 will have PE with Miss Stevens, our school sports coach.
Both Mrs Sessions and Mrs White will always be in the playground before or after school. Please, please, please come and see us if there is anything that you wish to discuss. No matter how big or how small we want to help! If you want to arrange a longer meeting, you can phone the office staff and they will arrange this for you.
In Year 2, the children will spend the morning in literacy, numeracy, reading and spelling/phonics or grammar lessons. In the afternoon, we will do anything from art, handwriting, PSHE, circle time, music and, of course, our exciting topic lessons!
Children are assessed regularly and progress can be discussed with parents at learning review meetings. We will contact you if we have any concerns about your child's progress but you are always welcome to ask how your child is doing at any time!
Homework will be given out every Thursday. Year 2 pupils will all receive literacy and numeracy homework, and sometimes topic homework too. Homework has to be handed in on a Monday morning. If homework is not handed in on a Monday morning, a text will be sent home.It is important that your child reads for 15 minutes each day, whether by themselves or with an adult. Do be sure to sign your child's reading journal and test their understanding through questioning.
PE is on Wednesday mornings and will be delivered by Miss Stevens, our very own sports coach! Children must wear sensible, safe PE kit. House T-shirts are available to buy at the office and can be worn for PE. PE kit must be clearly labelled with your child’s name on to avoid anything going missing! if your child does not bring in their PE kit a text will be sent home.
Over the year we will be studying a variety of different topics. In term 1 we will be looking at London during 1666 and how it was destroyed by a great fire. In term two we will compare modern London with the capital of India. After the Christmas holidays we will explore local habitats and the animals that live in them. In the final terms we explore Bristol more closely and the famous invetor: Brunel! It promises to be an exciting year!
Children's book bags should be brought to school every day to ensure that they are reading regularly at school and at home. We will change their reading books regularly once yellow reading record books have been signed.
Finally...please check regularly our class blog. We will keep it updated throughout the year so that you can see all of the exciting things that we get up to.
